Condor Express Whale Watching

Santa Barbara, CA
Family Friendly?:  Yes
Age Range:  All ages
Recommendations:  You will be on the water for at least 4 1/2 hours. If you have trouble with sea sickness, take appropriate measures before boarding.

On a recent visit to Santa Barbara, we enjoyed a great whale watching trip on the Condor Express. The crew, boat and experience were all first rate and a lot of fun.

We reserved our trip well ahead of time because we had been told that they do fill up during busy seasons. The reservation process was very easy and it was nice that they do not actually charge you until to arrive that day. Check-in was easy and quick.

As 10:00 am approached, we were allowed to board the boat and we were directed to the upper deck seating. Two very knowledgeable volunteers gave a brief presentation on what we could expect to see and answered any questions we had. Read more ›

Hiking In Utah – Little Wild Horse Canyon

Near Green River, UT
Family Friendly?:  Yes, for outdoorsy families
Age Range:  Pre-teens and up.
Recommendations:  Overall a fairly easy walk with just a couple of tricky areas.  Take lots of water and keep an eye and ear open for thunderstorms.

The San Rafael Swell is a huge sandstone dome in southeastern Utah. Westbound travelers on I-70 know it as line of cliffs just west of Green River that look like they were torn right out of the ground. As the dome rose, the surrounding ground was pushed up until it fractured into the ridge we see today. You can clearly see the layers that once were part of the flatlands to the east. In addition to being very scenic, the Swell also offers some of the most accessible canyon hiking in the country.

One of my favorite canyon hikes is the Bell Canyon/Little Wild Horse Canyon loop. Read more ›

Atlantis Submarines

Honolulu, HI
Family Friendly?:  Yes
Age Range:  No set age, but riders must be 36″ or taller
Recommendations:  The subs are fairly roomy and have large windows. However, you will be in an enclosed space with little room to move around. Be prepared if that bothers you.

Atlantis Submarines offers the opportunity to take a tour on a real submarine in a natural environment. That is not something most people get to experience! On a recent visit to Hawaii we just couldn’t resist and we were happy we did.

Most of the hotel concierge services and military ITT offices can set you up with a reservation in a couple of minutes. The meeting area is a dock located near the Hilton Hawaiian Village Hotel in Waikiki. We were staying close enough to walk there, but they offer a shuttle service as part of the package so why not take advantage of it? Read more ›

The Vertical Trek

Vertical Trek

Launching from a cliff

Roundtop Mountain Resort, PA
Family Friendly?:  Yes
Age Range:  Ages 10+
Restrictions:  Must be between 70 and 250 pounds
Recommendations: Much of the course is fairly high, around 40′.  Participants with a strong fear of heights may not enjoy this experience.  People with a moderate fear of heights should do well because the guides are very good at making them feel comfortable and secure.

Updated 3/8/16 – We enjoyed Roundtop Mountain Resorts Vertical Trek zip line tour so much a few years ago that we decided to do it again – it is worth a repeat.  This tour is completely hidden in the trees on the mountainside so don’t be fooled when you first pull in.  There are a couple of smaller zip lines near the base area but they are part of  Roundtop’s  Adventure Package, but they are not a good indication of the adventure that awaits above!
